MARIA Tran is a 22-year-old Vietnamese psychology graduate from the University of Western Sydney and an emerging filmmaker with Rumble Pictures based in south west Sydney.

Maria has been selected to have her film ‘Hieu Thao’ (Filial Piety) scripted and transformed into a short film with Metroscreen – Multicultural Mentorship Scheme.

The scheme is supported by the NSW Film and Television Office and Maria has been offered equipment, facilities hire, post production facilities and a $2000 budget to deliver her film.

The film is about a young eight-year-old Vietnamese girl’s journey into self discovery and empowerment, leading her to become the pivotal character in rebuilding her family.

‘Hieu Thao’ is about the struggles of family breakdowns and the lack of communication between family members that slowly erode the dynamics of the family.

Hieu is the girl that goes on a magical journey, befriends a cactus and, bit by bit, heals herself and her family.

“The character of Hieu will be played by a set of talented twins from Chester Hill,” Maria said, “and I will be collaborating with Chester Hill’s award winning filmmaker, Michael Zhu and my mentor, the well known film maker Khoa Do from Yagoona.
